Dear Ms. Obama, Please visit CLEW

sophal Ken, Women's Resource Centre, Siem Reap

On March 3rd, 2015, President and Ms. Obama announced an initiative, “let girls learn”. The Obama administration reportedly will expand efforts to work with other countries to help young girls worldwide attend and stay in school. Ms. Obama will be in Siem Reap, Cambodia on March 21st and 22nd to promote the initiative, meeting with United States’ Peace Corp workers who are engaged in trying to keep girls in school.

Ms. Obama, please come to Phnom Penh to see CLEW and talk to the students at our dorm. Otherwise, please go to the Women’s Resource Center in Siem Reap and visit Sophal (above left), one of our CLEW graduates, who is providing legal support and training to women and children. Sophal has sponsored students on her own to go to high school.

Please take a minute to listen to the reasons why people from the provinces don’t keep their girls in school and what it will take to keep them there. It is not enough to talk about keeping girls in school, you have to give them a reason to do so. A path to a better life must be shown to them through education. It has to result in a job, and preferably a career, that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

Unless a path is shown, the economic realities of poverty will probably dominate. The survival of the family is crucial and often the rural poor do not see a payoff in education. In our experience, farmers consider that students who spend four years getting an education are unlikely to get a job and will wind up back on the farm. In other words, four years wasted. Alternatively, young women are seen much as an economic unit to contribute wages to the parents.

Any plan to keep girls in school must provide an economic rationale indicating that forgoing the income the prospective student might provide today will be outweighed by the income she will earn in the future if given an education. This is the key to fostering parents’ support for educating their daughters.

Once an economically-justified path has been identified, you must have young women take that path and successfully establish themselves. Cambodia is expected to experience 7% growth in GDP this year and so it is an economy that does provide a measure of opportunity for those with the qualifications and contacts to do so.

At CLEW, we have developed such a path and we have had many graduates walk that path. As indicated in previous posts, our students have become role models in their communities, encouraging girls to stay in school.

So, Ms. Obama, please take time to visit CLEW, take time to see what has made our program successful and what it really takes to keep Cambodian girls from the provinces to stay in school.
